So what is hosting and why do I need it?
The term Hosting relates to the physical space where your webpage data is located (on a server within a data centre). All websites need hosting (unless you intend to host your website on your own personal PC), this is to ensure that your website is located on the correct specified server to store and handle your data. Having your website hosted in a data centre also ensures that it will have maximum up time and greater access to bandwidth.
Local versus International?
Having your website hosted locally or internationally each have their pro's and cons.
Local
Locally hosted websites provide less lag time when web pages are called for by local users, local service providers are easily contactable and tech support is usually concurrent with the local business hours of operation. However, locally hosted websites can sometimes be more expensive than those hosted internationally.
International
Internationally hosted websites may have a slightly longer lag time when pages are called by local users, but this may be negligable and may not be a factor if your webpage is not time critical (i.e. doesn't have live stock market prices displayed). International hosting is now more than ever a follow the sun operation, meaning that support is usually available 24 hours a day. Support is handed over to a new global time zone as that time zone's local business hours resume. International hosting is usually less expensive than local hosting, this is due to the sheer volume of data centres located in the USA or Europe.
Depending on the needs of your business and the response time needed for your website, these factors will help determine what is the most effective hosting solution for you.
